My Students Teach Me the World
Learning is a superpower.
Muddling through my students' strengths, needs and interests throughout my day to day life has taught me how pivotal it is to come back to my inner journey, the first step to soul retrieval.
I mean it half-figuratively. The sights, sounds, smells, and textures of kids -magical creatures- predominantly show unconditional love. They don't stop showing in our classes even though they have been given homework, tests, challenges, even madness. WELL, IT'S A SCHOOL.
But, as an educator, I would love to call such presence a symbol of faithfulness, more than mundane activities. My students, thus, teach me the world. They teach me these.
1. You Can Dissolve Fears.
When kids are legitimately terrified, they are just traveling along as they should be. And, what's so lucky about it, they are not alone. They've got favourite friends they can count on. Such relationship and connection are what make fears dissolved naturally, incrementally.
Well, sometimes imperfectly - because kids still complain, question themselves (and often cry.) But, they move on quickly. Ask them to do a costume party, cocoa party, biography writing, fable analysis, presentation across school, memorize long lines for a play, create a content of a vlog in no time - you name it. They're definitely worth their salt.
2. You Must Add Awesome Sauce to Flourish.
Yeah. We know that sometimes we're missing something, but we can't just figure out things easily. Yet, we still want to fit the world. AND, we don't have time to deal with the downcast.
So, add some sauce; small details that we believe are cute and create glitter.
Find the little things that make us feel both confident and weird in our unique way. Maybe it's a mega-crafted diamond made of plastic, maybe it's a self-sewn tail horse bag. Maybe it's just a new way of styling your bang. Maybe it's you finding a new nickname for some kids - like Mr. Infinity, Mr. flexible, Miss Pink Unicorn, Miss Christmas Carol. Then, we can pick blue. Or red.
The sauce is all up to us.
3. Don't wait. Get to "Happy" from "Happy."
Things are constantly changing. What's happening right now that feels so good? Kids are good at taking the BIG feelings. They can be happy before they're happy for they're always playful.
If we can just allow the excitement to navigate our days, "Miss, let's play!" requests are actually the guide to develop positive lens to see the world.
So, if we allow ourselves, focus on the happy thoughts. Emphasize the happy thoughts. Let's just play.
Yet, beneath all, I love you, kids. Study hard. Finish your lunch. Because of your smile, my heart beats for Oreo!!
Yours,
Sunshine
